Idioms Adapted Books and Activities Mini-Bundle

This Idioms Activities Mini-Bundle focuses on understanding idioms or figurative language and includes 3 "Idioms: What Does It Really Mean" Adapted Books, 3 Sets of "Idioms: Flipstrips" and 1 set of  Idioms Task Cards.

In each adapted book, students are given an idiom, and are asked, "What Does It Really Mean?"  The teacher or therapist reads along as students follow along and find the correct matching piece (or meaning) that goes with each page (or idiom). Students working independently can read and work through the books in literacy centers and workstations. Each book focuses on 10 different idioms.

Sample Text:

(Page 1)

"We say what we mean and we mean what we say,
But sometimes we say things in very strange ways!
 Like...
 He hit the books.
 And
 When pigs fly....
But what do they really mean?

(Page 2)

When we say, "He's a little under the weather, does it mean that he is sitting under a rain cloud?
Of course not!
What does it really mean?"

(Students match the answer to each page)

After the books have been introduced, the teacher or therapist can do the Flipstrips activities as a small group, or provide them to students to work on independently in workstations and literacy centers.

The Idioms Task Cards included in this set really work well in small group discussions, but can also be used as clothespin tasks, paperclip tasks, cookie sheet activities, or write/wipe (dry erase marker tasks) in literacy centers and workstations.

On each of the 60 task cards, the students are given an idiom and a meaning.  They are supposed to indicate whether the meaning on the card is correct or incorrect, by marking the "check mark" or "x" shown on the card.
