"We Don't Yell" Social Story Unit

"We Don't Yell" Social Story Unit

This Social Story Unit, "We Don't Yell," teaches students that yelling and screaming is not ok. It also teaches strategies that students can use instead of yelling.

This unit includes: 1 interactive adapted book, 12 task cards for practice and review, and 4 full color coping strategies posters (Visuals) that can be displayed in a "cool-down," area or kept on a metal ring at student desks. It also includes a black and white reflection sheet that students may use to reflect on their behavior, by writing or drawing their answers.

This unit works well as a small group activity and especially with social skills groups because the activities are designed to foster conversations about using coping strategies at school instead of yelling or screaming.

The adapted book provides a fun and interactive way for students of all abilities to participate in learning strategies for coping with anger and aggression.

Sample Text:

"We want to yell when we get mad.

We want to yell when things go bad.

We want to yell when we're upset.

We want to yell, and throw a fit!

Sometimes things aren't going well.

We use our words--but we don't yell!"

After the teacher or therapist has read the book with students, students can complete the task cards and discuss them as a group.

There is also a set of "How Yelling Hurts People," and "What To Do Instead" posters/or visuals that are designed to serve as visual reinforcers.
