Idioms Adapted Book I

Idioms Adapted Book I

These Idiom Activities include the "Idioms: What Do They Really Mean?" Adapted Book 1 that focuses on understanding idioms or figurative language, and 1 set of Idioms "Flipstrips" for additional practice.

In this adapted book, students are given an idiom and are asked, "What Does It Really Mean?"  The teacher or therapist reads along as students follow along and find the correct matching piece (or meaning) that goes with each page (or idiom). Students working independently can read and work through the book in literacy centers and workstations. The book includes 10 different idioms.

Sample Text:

(Page 1)

"We say what we mean and we mean what we say,
But sometimes we say things in very strange ways!
 Like...
 Zip your lips.
 And
Two heads are better than one....
But what do they really mean?

(Page 2)

When we say, "She's all ears," does it mean that she has ears all over her body?
Of course not!
What does it really mean?"

(Students match the answer to each page)

Idioms Included In Book 1:

"She's all ears."
"The cat has got his tongue."
"She's feeling blue."
"It's written all over her face."
"He cried his eyes out."
"Zip your lips."
"It's raining cats and dogs."
"He's tickled pink."
"Somebody let the cat out of the bag."
"Two heads are better than one."

After the book has been introduced, the teacher or therapist can do the Flipstrips activities as a small group, or provide them to students to work on independently in workstations and literacy centers.
